Betrayal! In a single word, Clinton once again turns his back on his promises and his supporters. This time it was us!

I contacted both the Campaign for Military Service and the Human Rights Campaign Fund. In both conversations, it was made clear that the national recommendation is a call for civil disobedience or other actions that could generate high publicity against the content of the executive order.

In fact, Tim McFeeley, executive director of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, was the first person arrested after Clinton announced the final content of the order. He was one of nine who blocked entry to a public building. His action resulted in local and national publicity. If you and your group of friends are planning a similar action, please be sure to notify us, the Chronicle and the straight press.

Stonewall Cleveland organized a march and rally, during the Gulf War, against the military's ban. We could do the same thing again. We'd need a lot of community support. If you're interested in working on a march and rally task force, come to the next Stonewall meeting on August 16.

We've also come up with a clever publicity stunt that everyone, in or out of the closet, can help with. We are going to "Stick It to Nunn"! By telling everyone to Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Sam Nunn has in effect put adhesive tape over everyone's mouth. Can you picture that? To be sure everyone can, we're going to graphically demonstrate what it looks like. We'll be taking a group picture and sending it to Sam Nunn along with box after box of tape... every kind available; masking, duct, adhesive, surgical, packing tape, you name it. We'll be sending the graphic photos of our taped mouths alongside the mountains and mountains of tape to all the media.

We're collecting tape at collection centers such as Gifts of Athena, the Center and all three Booksellers locations. (Be sure to thank them for their support.) Or, if you want to send a donation to support the purchase of more tape, send it to Stonewall, Box 5936, Cleveland, OH 44101-1936. The

deadline to make your donation of tape or money is August 15. Help make our message clear... Stick It!

Other news includes the tentative date and content for the next Gay Town Hall Meeting. It is planned for Monday, October 4, at 7 pm, at CSU again. We hope to have a two-part agenda. First, a panel of politically astute individuals to inform us on the worthiness of the candidates who will be running for local election in November. And second, a women's panel to discuss women's (womyn's) issues. Volunteers for either panel should contact me at 281-9205.

Now, I'm very proud to announce the election of 13 individuals to the board of Stonewall Cleveland: James Anderson, Robert Dubbs, Floyd Fike, Dave Lahti, John Lauro, Tim Leiden, Scott Marous, Dennis McMahon, Dan Milner, Dave Muniak, John Nolan, Calvin Stokes, and myself. Board terms are for two years. Officers, for a team of one year are: President-Keith Sutton, Vice President-John Nolan, TreasurerDave Muniak, Secretary-Calvin Stokes and Membership Coordinator-Floyd Fike. Please extend a congratulations and a thank you to those individuals for volunteering their time and skills.

Furthermore, the newly elected board members extend an open invitation to all our communities to join Stonewall and its board. We are seeking an expanded diversity to the board of Stonewall. We have been getting a large turnout of women at the Gay Town Hall Meetings and hope several women and representatives of other communities will begin attending Stonewall meetings. After a short period of regular attendance, we would hope these representatives would consider a board appointment. The bylaws authorize the president to fill vacant board positions. The bylaws also allow for a maximum of 20 board members, so we have seven remaining positions to fill with interested, involved individuals. Please consider making a contribution of your talents, because we want and need your perspective! ✓

Chevrei Tikva

Cleveland's Synagogue with an outreach to the Lesbian and Gay community P.O. BOX 18120 Cleveland, Ohio 44118 (216) 932-5551

Member of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the World Congress of Gay and Lesbian Jewish Organizations.

Usually in this space we print news of the synagogue, past events, futures, goals, etc. However, our president, Gregg Levine, received the following copy of a letter written by Rabbi David Gelfand, spiritual leader of Cleveland's Fairmount Temple.

Since the recent announcement of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue" policy, Rabbi Gelfand expressed, with all of us, the poor compromise in the civil rights of gays and lesbians. Members of Chevrei Tikva also sent post cards this past spring to our lawmakers in Washington airing our views of the subject.

Following is the letter Gelfand sent to Ohio's representatives, senators, and President Clinton:

"I am writing to you to support the President's efforts to lift the military's ban on homosexuals. I do so as a religious leader who is deeply concerned about the moral fiber of our nation. I am deeply distressed that we will ask people to "not tell," thereby insisting that people lie, and robbing people of their dignity. As you well know, I represent a large synagogue with over 6,500 individuals, covering the geographical and socioeconomic spectrum of the Jewish community of Cleveland. I believe, unquestionably, that the vast majority of my congregants agree with this position.

"As a person of faith, I support lifting the ban! I believe that it is not the job of our government to discriminate in employment.

Moreover, I believe that all sexual orientations should be treated equally; that individuals should not be discharged from any position, including military service, based on their sexual preference. As well, I am more concerned with sexual misconduct, such as the "Tailhook scandal,” than I am about people's individual private choices.

"In meetings throughout the ecumenical community, I find overwhelming support for lifting the ban. All people should be judged on their behavior, not their sexual orientation. This is the ultimate, vital, moral distinction that we in the religious community seek. Making this distinction, all military personnel, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be held to the same standard regarding sexual harassment, fraternization and sexual assault.

"Finally, prejudice should not determine policy. To have the nation's largest employer allowed to discriminate because military leaders fear the prejudice of their own troops is a morally intolerable situation. On this premise, we would still have a segregated military. It is the obligation of our leaders, including our military leaders, to create an environment where all people will be accepted for the betterment of our country and its moral fiber.

"I look forward to hearing from you concerning this matter,

Rabbi David J. Gelfand"
